Silvi Materials Supports New Playground at Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia

This summer, Silvi Materials had the opportunity to support Ronald McDonald House Charities Philadelphia Region as the organization began work on a new outdoor playground and recreation space at its Chestnut Street House in West Philadelphia.

Silvi provided approximately 45 cubic yards of concrete for the project, helping establish the foundation for a new space designed to give children and families staying at the House more opportunities to play, exercise and spend time outdoors.

Creating a New Ronald McDonald House Playground for Families

The Chestnut Street House is an important resource for families whose children are receiving treatment at Philadelphia-area hospitals. Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia was founded in 1974 as the first Ronald McDonald House in the world, creating a model that has since expanded around the globe.

In 2019, the Chestnut Street House expanded from 45 to 127 guest bedrooms. With that growth came a need for additional outdoor space where families could step away from the challenges of hospital stays and spend time together.

The new project transformed more than 2,500 square feet of outdoor space into an inclusive recreation area featuring a children’s playground, walking track, seating and basketball court.

The design reflects the different ways families may want to use the space, from playing on the playground or shooting a basketball to simply walking outside. RMHC’s goal is to create an area that is accessible and welcoming for guests of all ages.

Building the Foundation for the New Playground

Before the playground equipment and other amenities could be installed, the project needed a durable foundation.

Silvi worked with the RMHC Philadelphia team to provide approximately 45 cubic yards of concrete across multiple pours. Our ready-mix team delivered the concrete to the Chestnut Street House as construction of the new outdoor space moved forward.

As Laura Van Tassel, Director of Development at RMHC Philadelphia, explained during the pour, the concrete provides the strong foundation needed to help the playground serve families for years to come.

The finished space sits just outside one of the House’s family playrooms, extending opportunities for recreation and family time into the outdoors.

Supporting Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia

For more than 50 years, Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia has supported families navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives. In addition to lodging near area children’s hospitals, the organization provides meals, transportation, social work resources, educational programming, family activities and other support services.

Projects like the new Chestnut Street playground add another resource for those families, a place where children can play, parents can spend time outside and families can enjoy moments together away from the hospital environment.
